Congratulations to the wonderful Michele Leggott, who is a finalist for this year's New Zealand Post Book Awards, with her latest collection Heartland. The New Zealand Post Book Awards are awarded annually to the very best books written by New Zealanders.

Michele Leggott, Professor of English at the University of Auckland, has been shortlisted for her eighth book of poetry. Heartland follows on from her 2009 collection, Mirabile Dictu, in its exploration of light and of gathering dark. Leggott describes her book as “a destination and a song, a shadow and a single word with two chambers.” Director of Auckland University Press, Sam Elworthy said, ‘‘Michele Leggott is one of this country’s poetry champions—on the road, in print, through the New Zealand Electronic Poetry Centre, as New Zealand’s poet laureate—and so it’s a thrill to see her great new book Heartland shortlisted for the New Zealand Post Awards. We look forward to a big night.″

We're delighted also that our poet Anne Kennedy (winner of last year's poetry prize) is on the fiction shortlist with Last Days of the National Costume.

The winner of 2014 New Zealand Post Book Awards will be announced on August 27 at the awards ceremony in Wellington.
