The Lark Quartet

Elizabeth Smither

‘There is much pleasure and celebration to be found here – good friends, great desserts, joyous pregnancies. But the overall register is bittersweet. The Lark Quartet is a collection of hymns to those perfect, true notes that cannot hang in the air for long.’ – Kate Camp, Evening Post

Elizabeth Smither, one of New Zealand’s most distinguished poets, has perfected a distinctive and elegant style in such a way that it is easy to take the real quality of her poems for granted. But this is among her best collections, moving through a range of attentions – friends, gardens, works of art – with great charm and an unexpected and quirky wit.

Taranaki writer Elizabeth Smither has written four novels, four books of short stories and fourteen books of poetry. She has twice won the major award for New Zealand poetry and was the 2002 Te Mata Poet Laureate. She was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit and was awarded an honorary DLitt from The University of Auckland in for her contributions to literature.

Winner of Montana New Zealand Book of the Year Award Poetry Category 2000.
