Making a Difference: A History of the Auckland College of Education 1881–2004

Louise Shaw

‘. . . will also appeal to those with a broader interest in the history of Auckland and the history of New Zealand education.’ – Kay Morris Matthews, NZ Journal of History

This comprehensive history of the Auckland College of Education was commissioned to celebrate its 125 years of existence and its merger in 2005 with the University of Auckland.

Making a Difference gives a detailed account of events, sets them in context and highlights repeated themes, such as relations between college and university, and between college and government, which frequently concern under-resourcing. Attention is given to the voices of students and especially to the college leaders, using oral history sources as well as written documents.
