Bob Orr
Poet and boatman.
Bob Orr was born in Hamilton in 1949 and brought up on farms in the rural districts around Hoe-o-Tainui and Morrinsville. He has lived in the Waikato, Auckland, Sydney and Wellington and now divides his time between the Coromandel and Auckland, where he works on the Waitemata Harbour.
Bob Orr is a poet of the Big Smoke generation and was one of those most centrally associated with the radical magazine Freed and with The Young New Zealand Poets in the early 1970s. He has been writing poems since he was twelve, ‘when I found that words and their arrangement, actual and possible, were a game unlike any other.’
Orr has published seven collections of poems, four of those with Auckland University Press.
