Roger Neich

1944 - 2010; anthropologist and ethnologist.

Roger Neich was curator of Ethnology at the Auckland War Memorial Museum and professor of Anthropology at The University of Auckland. He carried out fieldwork across the Pacific, notably in Papua New Guinea, Samoa and New Zealand. He was the ethnologist at the National Museum of New Zealand 1969–1986, undertaking research 1980–82 at the University of California, Berkeley, after being awarded a postgraduate research fellowship. Neich was co-curator of the celebrated Māori exhibition at the British Museum in 1996. He published widely on traditional Māori and Pacific art and is the author of Painted Histories (AUP, 1993), Pacific Tapa (1997), Pacific Jewellery and Adornment (2004) and other books.
